Waipu is one of our favourite weekend getaways. It’s a real gem tucked just out of the big smoke. We spend heaps of time in Waipu and we are sure you will love it.
When picking places to stay, Waipu caters to all budgets. Option One - Treat yourself at Waipu Glamping and Barbs 5 star hospitality, the outdoor bath, & smores. Or take Option Two and go traditional at Camp Waipu Cove. CWC is a classic kiwi campground with that million dollar view, perched right on the beach-front. Book a cabin or just pitch a tent - either way you are moments from the magic but on a bit more of a budget.
Waipu beach turns it on from sunrise. The beach literally turns golden. The main entrance is great for families as it has heaps of shade and a shallow, warm lagoon. Major plus, the waves can be bloody good at Waipu and is always worth a look so don’t forget a board.
Our recommendation for your morning coffee is Feoh Espresso. The coffee is great and the set up is groovy. Ricky, the owner, can spin a good yarn. He roasts his own beans and has got it really dialed in. You wont get a menu here but try one of his cheese rolls...they are 10. Unfortunately he shuts up shop on a Saturday (fair enough).
If it is a Saturday, there are still plenty of options. Goody Goody is great for a classic Allpress coffee and cooked breakfast (their date scones are real good too) or Little Red Coffee for a Kokako brew.
Then there is Cove Waipu - back at the beach. Its does a pretty good menu but the main advantage is the beach straight across the road. Get a smoothie or a iced coffee and whip straight over to the waves.
When it’s time for a little adventure, head to Piroa Falls. Its a 15min drive & just an 8 minute walk to the falls - which are beautoful. The walk is mellow enough for an 8 month pregnant woman and a 2 year to do easily so no excuses. If it’s hot then the pools are good to go for a refreshing dip or a small climb up to the waterfall itself for a head massage.
Drive back through Waipu township, check out the vintage shops (see our guide) and then head to McLeods Pizza Barn - this place always has a vibe, amaaazing pizza and their famous in-house brewed beers.
We always make sure we head over to Langs Beach as its so beautiful there too. After a biggish Saturday it’s the perfect spot to relax. Our favourite is Ding Bay - a little beach you can walk to from the northern end of Langs. If you are feeling super active then definitely do the Coastal walk from Ding Bay to Waipu Cove...it’s a little rugged in parts but such a great walk with beautiful views. It’s around 2 hours long but well worth it.
Then it’s back to Cove for a well earnt beer and some lunch before crashing back at the accom for an afternoon nap. After prepping to get back on the road pop into Magic Tasty for dinner - you won't regret their fish and chips, we rate them in a big way. Enjoy a magical sunset on that golden sand before heading home. Bliss.
Make sure you top up at Millwater Gull on the way back before getting back to those crazy city prices.
Bloody good weekend if you ask us.
