Waipu is one of our favourite towns. Only 1.5 hours from Auckland - check our favourite spots here for a weekend away.
We love staying at Waipu Glamping. A beautiful experience hosted by Barb - the absolute best. Staying here is incredibly peaceful - surrounded by native bush in the country yet you are 15 mins drive from the beach. We have come here twice - with out the kids for a romantic wedding anniversary and have also bought the groms. This place caters perfectly to both.
Waipu beach turns it on from sunrise. The beach literally turns golden (and there is usually a good wave so take your board). Grab a coffee from Feoh Espresso from 7am then head down and take it all in. Obviously, the more time spent at the beach the better so if you are going to spend the day and want quiet - park at the carpark just south of the Waipu Campground. If you have kids we recommend Waipu Cove - there is heaps of shade, a playground, a shallow warm lagoon, The Cove Cafe across the road annnnd still gets good surf. Cannot loose.
Feoh Espresso. As soon as you walk in the door to Feoh you know its legit. Ricky, the owner, spins a good yarn and an even better coffee. He roasts his own beans and has got it really dialed in. You wont get a cooked breaky here but try one of his cheese rolls...they dont look decent but they are a 10. Unfortunately he shuts up shop on a Saturday. If it is a Saturday, there are still plenty of options try Little Red Coffee for a Kokako brew. For a full service cafe with a cooked breaky then go Goody Goody.
For your dinners you HAVE to pop over to Mangawhai and eat Gringas - the best mexican food truck. Seriously worth the drive but maybe call ahead to pre-order cause they get busy.
Of course check out the local - McLeods Pizza Barn in Waipu township. It is kind of must do when in the area. Amazing pizza, good vibes and their famous in house brewed beer.
Every weekend needs a little adventure. We love Piroa Falls - a fun forest walk that leads to stunning waterfalls / swimming hole. Its about 10 mins from Waipu township and is only a 10 minute trek - which Charlotte did at 8 months pregnant and Boston when he was 2 (aka no excuses).
There are actually quite a few vintage spots in Waipu. Our favourite is Industry. We have bought a collection of goods from here over the years. Well worth a stop in.
We hope you love Waipu as much as we do - forever one of our favourite places to travel too. Check the full guide here.
